Notes  Obituary:
  • Obituary of Martha Etta Segers Simmons

Mrs. Martha Simmons, wife of the late Richard Simmons passed away March 9th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eula Woodall at Clarkesville with whom she had made her home since the passing of her husband 18 years ago.
She was born December 15, 1858 in Banks County, but spent the greater portion of her life in Toccoa and Stephens County.
Mrs. Simmons was a very interesting person even in old age. She attracted attention of every person she contacted through her brilliant personality. She was a good neighbor, faithful wife and mother and happily celebrated her "Golden Wedding" before the passing of her beloved husband.
She was the daughter of Martin Segers and Mary Bradley Segers, who, according to her family, were direct descendants of Pioneer families from England. General Andrew Jackson being her great uncle on her paternal side and General Bradley a great uncle on her maternal side. A family history and record has been kept and handed down from generation to generation with many interesting facts. Several of her ancestors were leaders in George Washington's day, and the record shows that one of her direct ancestors, Hon. Jared Crittenden, sign the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
She was a consecrated Christian woman, having been "born again" at the age of 16. She lived a full life with a supreme faith in Jesus. In old age and ill health she bore her cross with a smile and encouraging words to those around her bedside. Often she remarked that her work was and she was just waiting for the lord to come carry her home.
Surviving her are 8 children, 19 grandchildren, 71 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.
Her children are: Harvey Simmons, Toccoa; Mrs. Emma Brady, Elberton; David Simmons, Anderson, S.C.; Mrs. Lucy Crawford, Mrs. Ella Smith, and Russell Simmons, Toccoa; Mrs. George Watkins, Eastanollee, and Mrs. John Woodall, Clarkesville.
Funeral services were held at Liberty Hill Baptist Church Monday, March 11, at 2 p.m., Rev. G. W. Rumsey and Dr. A. T. Cline officiating. Interment was in the family lot with Fred Northcutt Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers were six grandsons, Herschel Simmons, Horace Watkins, Ray Crawford, Albert and Tom Simmons and Homer Brady. Flower girls were six granddaughters, Mrs. J. W. Alexander, Mrs. Ernest Brady, Mrs. Frank Simmons, Mrs. Joe Wilson, Mrs. Charles Stonecypher and Miss Jewel Watkins.
